When you access your RIC account and utilize our Site and Services, RIC automatically records certain information about your use, such as account activity, data displayed or clicked on, and other information including browser type, IP address, date and time of access, cookie ID, and referrer URL. Some of this information collected, such as Internet Protocol (“IP”) address and the contents of certain cookies, may include Personal Information.
Automated Collection of Information
We use third-party analytics tools to help us measure traffic and usage trends for our Site and Services. These tools collect information sent by your device or our Site and Services, including the web pages you visit, add-ons, and other information that assists us in improving the Site and Services. We collect and use this analytics information with analytics information from other Users so that it cannot reasonably be used to identify any particular individual User.
We use Google Analytics for analytics purposes. Google Analytics uses its own cookies. It is only used to improve how our Site works. You can find out more information about Google Analytics cookies here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/resources/concepts/gaConceptsCookies
You can find out more about how Google protects your information here: www.google.com/analytics/learn/privacy.html
For users in the EU, you can prevent the use of Google Analytics relating to your use of our Site by downloading and installing the browser plugin available via this link: http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=en-GB
Log file information:
Log file information is automatically reported by your browser each time you make a request to access (i.e., visit) a web page or app. It can also be provided when the content of the webpage or app is downloaded to your browser or device.
When you use our Site, our servers automatically record certain log file information, including your web request, IP address, browser type, referring / exit pages and URLs, number of clicks and how you interact with links on the Site, domain names, landing pages, pages viewed, and other such information. We may also collect similar information from emails sent to our Users which then help us track which emails are opened and which links are clicked by recipients. The information allows for more accurate reporting and improvement of the Site and Services.
When you use a mobile device like a tablet or phone to access our Site, we may access, collect, monitor, store on your device, and/or remotely store one or more “Device Identifiers.” Device Identifiers are small data files or similar data structures stored on or associated with your mobile device, which uniquely identify your mobile device. A Device Identifier may be data stored in connection with the device hardware, data stored in connection with the device’s operating system or other software, or data sent to the device by the Site.
A Device Identifier may deliver information to us or to a third party partner about how you browse and use the Site and may help us or others provide reports or personalized content and ads. Some features of the Site and Services may not function properly if use or availability of Device Identifiers is impaired or disabled.
“Metadata” is technical data that is associated with Content. For example, Metadata can describe how, when and by whom a piece of Content was collected and how that content is formatted.
Users can add or may have Metadata added to their Content (e.g., to mark keywords when you post a photo), geotag (e.g., to mark your location to a photo), comments or other data. This makes your Content more searchable by others and more interactive. If you geotag your photo or tag your photo using other’s APIs then, your latitude and longitude will be stored with the photo and searchable (e.g., through a location or map feature) if your photo is made public by you.
Like many Sites, we use technologies, such as cookies and web beacons, which allow us to make your visit to our Site easier, more efficient and more valuable by providing you with a customized experience and recognizing you when you return.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small pieces of information that are issued to your computer when you visit a website and which store and occasionally track information about your use of a website. A number of cookies used by the Site last only for the duration of your web session and expire when you close your browser. Other cookies are used for a longer duration, where for example, we are required to remember your login details for when you next return to the Site.
The cookies we use are explained below and based on the International Chamber of Commerce guide for cookie categories.
Category 1: Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around our Site and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the Site. Without these cookies, services you have asked for, like shopping baskets or e-billing, cannot be provided.
Category 2: Performance Cookies
These cookies collect information about how visitors use our Site, for instance which pages visitors go to most often, and if they get error messages from web pages. These cookies don’t collect information that identifies a visitor. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. It is only used to improve how our Site works.
Category 3: Functionality Cookies
These cookies allow our Site to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. These cookies can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts and other parts of web pages that you can customize. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.
Category 4: Targeting or Advertising Cookies
These cookies are used to deliver advertisements more relevant to you and your interests. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an advertisement as well as help measure the effectiveness of the advertising campaigns. They are usually placed by advertising networks with the website operator’s permission. They remember that you have visited a website and this information is shared with other organizations such as advertisers. Quite often targeting or advertising cookies will be linked to site functionality provided by the other organization.
The essential features of the Site require strictly necessary cookies to allow the Site to function in the correct manner and to allow you to move around the Site and use its features. RIC’s strictly necessary cookies can also identify you as being logged in to the Site and to ensure that you are able to connect to secure areas of the Site. If you choose not to accept these cookies, you will be unable to use the Services.
Cookies of this nature which are used on the Site only collect information by reference to the IP address that you are using. This information is used to inform you of products and/or services which may be of interest to you. These cookies may also provide advertising agencies with information on your visit so that they can present you with advertisements which may be of interest to you. For more information about this type of interest-based advertising, and about how to turn this feature off please visit www.youronlinechoices.com or http://www.youronlinechoices.com/uk/your-ad-choices if you are based in the EU.
Some of the cookies used by the Site are served by us, and some are served by third parties who are delivering services on our behalf.
A cookie cannot read Personal Information off your hard disk or read cookie files created by other sites; indeed, the only Personal Information a cookie can contain is information you supply yourself. Accepting the cookies used on our Site may give us access to information about your browsing behavior, which we may use to personalize your experience and track user traffic patterns, and to merge this info when you register. We do this in order to determine the usefulness of our Site information to our users and to see how effective our navigational structure is in helping users reach that information.
Web beacons or Pixel Tags
In addition, RIC uses web beacons (also known as Pixel Tags) in conjunction with cookies to understand user behavior. Web beacons are simply a convenient way of gathering basic statistics and managing cookies, and do not give away any extra information from your computer. Turning off your browser’s cookies will prevent web beacons from tracking your specific activity.
You can refuse to set cookies by changing your browser settings. More information about cookies and how to block cookies is available from www.allaboutcookies.org Please note however, that by blocking or deleting cookies you may not be able to take full advantage of the Site.
In addition to cookies, tracking Gifs may be set by RIC or third parties in respect of your use of the Site. Tracking Gifs are small image files within the content of the Site or the body of RIC marketing e-mails or newsletters so that RIC or third parties can understand which parts of the Site are visited or whether particular content is of interest.
RIC is continually striving to develop improved ways of managing your cookie preferences. As new technologies and solutions emerge, this Cookies Policy may be updated to reflect any such advances in technology and preference management tools.
How we Respond to “Do Not Track” Signals
We do not currently recognize automated browser signals regarding tracking mechanisms, which may include “Do Not Track” instructions. For more information on Do Not Track please visit http://www.allaboutdnt.org/.
We may also use Flash cookies (which are also known as Flash LSOs) on our Site to collect and store information about your use of our Site. Unlike other cookies, Flash cookies cannot be removed or rejected via your browser settings. If you do not want Flash cookies stored on your computer or mobile device, you can adjust the settings of your Flash player to block Flash LSO storage using the tools contained in the Website Storage Settings Panel at https://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html You can also control Flash LSOs by going to the Global Storage Settings Panel at https://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html and following the instructions. Please note that setting the Flash Player to restrict or limit acceptance of Flash LSOs may reduce or impede the functionality of some Flash applications, including, potentially, Flash applications used in connection with our Site.
